A selection of 40+17 pictures taken in 2016 and 17. From Holland, Belgium, Switzerland, France, Italy and Brazil. Lightly edited in DxO PhotoLab, two HDRs in Aurora (in Urubici). Most images are cropped to 16:9 and in particular 3840×2160, which is a typical 4k/UHD TV screen. On standard HD (1920×1080) this format also works well. I took over 12000 pictures in those two years, not counting bracketing or other series of the same image. To select only 40 (at first, I later added 17) is an interesting challenge. What criterium to apply? Primarily it has been intuitive, whether I like a particular image. But I never strive to take postcard pictures, perhaps even the contrary, trying to create an image of something that has struck me. The owl staring. The meeting of the waters; the dark water of the En and the whitish water of the Flaz. It reminds the confluence of the Rio Solimões with the Rio Negro in Manaus, joint together to form the Rio Amazonas. To take pictures that do not distract from the main subject is often problematic, there’s some work there. Sometimes it is nice to have a tension, a disturbance if you will, sometimes not. Rhythm, movement and drama are some elements of interest. More reflections on this to come…
