Venice has been one of my favorite places since long time. We first visited it in 1990-91 but the photos on this site are from 2007, 2013 and 2017. The 2007 photos were taken with the Olympus SP550UZ and the Pentax Optio S7, the 2013 photos with a Canon 100D and the 2017 photos with an Olymps Pen-F. Venice is one of the most touristy places in the world if not the most touristy.
Actually, inhabitants of the city are fleeing from it because of the tourist plague (and the inundations). And when I went to Venice with my students some of them didn’t like the museum look. Still, Venice is very much alive, with the famous Biennale and many other events. In 1990-91 we felt that there were too many tourist traps in Venice, terribly bad restaurants with high prices. We could only find one nice restaurant during the whole trip. But nowadays I find that in spite of the presence of tourists and relatively high prices there are many nice places. Possibly the internet, and in particular tripadvisor, helped people to avoid the tourist traps and forced restaurants to improve quality. Also, it is very important to know that the tourists stay mainly near the trangular route from Piazzale Roma to Piazza San Marco via the Rialto bridge and the Accademia bridge. If you go deeper into Dorsoduro or to the north to Cannaregio and Castello you will see far fewer tourists and come across nice little local restaurants.
